Car Manufacturers in India: an overview
The Chennai region holds one of the largest concentrations of car plants in India. Hyundai Motor India, which dates its Indian operations to 1996, has its registered office and main factory at Irungattukottai near Sriperumbudur, and BMW assembles vehicles at Mahindra World City south of the city. Renault took full control of the Oragadam plant it had run jointly with Nissan after the Competition Commission of India cleared the deal in 2025, and Citroën builds the Basalt and C3 Aircross at Thiruvallur.
Western India is the second major base. Škoda Auto Volkswagen India runs the Volkswagen Group's business in the country across six brands, and Hyundai added a second factory at Talegaon in Pune district. In Gujarat, MG Motor India bought General Motors' Halol plant in 2017, with a first-phase capacity of 80,000 vehicles a year. Further south, Kia's plant in Andhra Pradesh was built with an investment of about US$2 billion and an annual capacity of 300,000 units.
Several makers are run from the National Capital Region, among them Honda Cars India, whose corporate office is in Greater Noida while its cars are built at Tapukara in Rajasthan. Pune-based Force Motors, founded in 1958, makes passenger vans and utility vehicles alongside engines. Tata Motors' car business now trades on the stock exchanges as Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles following the group's split of its passenger and commercial vehicle operations.
