Construction Companies in Oman: an overview
Oman's construction sector is led by a group of long-established local contractors. Galfar Engineering & Contracting was established in 1972 and is a public joint stock company (SAOG). It describes itself as one of the largest multi-disciplined engineering and construction firms in the Sultanate. Sarooj dates its start to 1976 and Bahwan Engineering to 1977. Desert Line Projects also began in 1977, building some of the first roads into Oman's interior.
Much of the work is public infrastructure. Desert Line Projects lists highways, bridges, dams and utilities among its projects, and its clients include Muscat Municipality and the transport ministry. Bahwan Engineering did the MEP design-build for the 400,000 sqm Muscat International Airport terminal. In 2024 Galfar won a RO117 million contract from Nama Water Services for water distribution networks in Al Dhahirah Governorate.
Several foreign groups have also worked in Oman for decades. Oman Shapoorji Company dates to 1975, when engineers from India's Shapoorji Pallonji group arrived to build the Qasr Al Alam Palace, and it now employs more than 6,500 people. Archirodon added Oman to its markets in 1981 and keeps an office in Muscat. CCC lists an office in Ghala, and Spain's Técnicas Reunidas runs an engineering office in Al Khuwair.
