Stainless Steel Manufacturers in India: an overview
Jindal Stainless, incorporated in 1970, is by far the largest producer on this list. It runs melt shops at Kalinga Nagar in Odisha's Jajpur district and at Hisar in Haryana, and reports an annual melt capacity of 4.2 million tonnes across 16 manufacturing and processing facilities in India and abroad. Its subsidiary Chromeni Steels adds a site at Mundra in Gujarat. SAIL's Salem Steel Plant, established in 1972, melts stainless in an electric arc furnace with AOD refining. It has a 364,000-tonne hot rolling mill and a 70,000-tonne cold rolling mill. Hisar Metal Industries, set up in 1991, rolls precision strips as thin as 0.08 mm.
Bars, wire rods and wire come from a larger group of smaller melt shops. Mukand, incorporated in 1937, started its Kalwe plant near Thane in 1965 with an electric arc furnace and a continuous casting machine, and still makes stainless wire rods and bars there. Viraj Profiles began melting at Tarapur in 1992 and made its first stainless in 1995. Panchmahal Steel melts, rolls and finishes bars and wire at one site in Kalol, Panchmahals. Mangalam Worldwide reports a combined capacity of 1,80,000 tonnes at Halol, Changodar and Kapadvanj. Ambica Steels' melting unit at Sahibabad can make up to 80,000 tonnes of stainless a year.
Tube and pipe makers are the third group, and most of them are in Gujarat. Ratnamani Metals & Tubes, founded in 1983, makes seamless stainless tubes at Indrad in Mehsana district and seamless and welded pipes at Bhimasar in Kutch. Venus Pipes & Tubes was incorporated in 2015, built its plant at Dhaneti in Kutch that year and listed on NSE and BSE in May 2022. Tubacex of Spain bought Prakash Steelage in 2015 and makes cold-finished tubes at Umbergaon. Alleima of Sweden counts Mehsana among its largest tube plants. Jindal SAW lists more than 50,000 tonnes a year of stainless tube capacity at Nagothane, Kosi Kalan and Samaghogha.
