MNC Companies in Chennai: an overview
Foreign carmakers and vehicle firms account for much of the multinational presence around Chennai, most of it on the Sriperumbudur–Oragadam belt west of the city. Hyundai Motor India, set up in 1996, has its registered office and car plant in the SIPCOT industrial park at Irungattukottai, while its corporate office is in Gurugram. Daimler India Commercial Vehicles' plant at Oragadam covers 400 acres and also houses its headquarters, R&D and a test track. Renault agreed to take full ownership of the Renault Nissan plant at Oragadam, a deal the Competition Commission of India cleared in July 2025.
Electronics and industrial-equipment makers share the same corridor. Samsung opened its Sriperumbudur factory in 2007, and Salcomp runs a manufacturing unit inside the Nokia Telecom SEZ in SIPCOT Phase III. Komatsu India started producing mining dump trucks in Chennai in 2007 and opened a hydraulic excavator plant at Oragadam in 2015. Danfoss gives its Indian address in the SIPCOT Industrial Growth Centre at Oragadam, Schwing Stetter India has its corporate office at Irungattukottai, and Nippon Paint India is registered in SIPCOT's Sriperumbudur park with a corporate office on Greams Road.
Some subsidiaries listed on Indian exchanges are based in the city's older industrial estates. ZF Commercial Vehicle Control Systems India, formerly WABCO India, and ESAB India both have registered offices in the Ambattur Industrial Estate, and Igarashi Motors India is at the MEPZ special economic zone in Tambaram. Cognizant's Indian subsidiary has delivery centres along the IT corridor, including the ELCOT SEZ at Sholinganallur. BMW builds cars at Mahindra World City near Chengalpattu, and Yamaha makes two-wheelers at Vadagal, though both companies run their Indian businesses from offices in the north.
