Pharma Companies in Goa: an overview
Five of the companies listed here make medicines in the Verna Industrial Estate in Salcette taluka. Lupin makes complex formulations on plot B-15 in Phase 1A, and Abbott India's factory stands on plots L-18 and L-19. Indoco Remedies manufactures on plots L-32 to L-34, including a sterile products plant. FDC has three Verna plants, built in 1999, 2002 and 2004, and Marksans Pharma's Plant 1 occupies a 23,900 square metre campus approved by the US FDA, UK MHRA and Australia's TGA.
North Goa has a second cluster around Mapusa and Panaji. Unichem built its Pilerne plant, about 12 km from Panaji, in 1997 to serve export markets, and its research centre of excellence on the same estate houses more than 200 scientists. Centaur Pharmaceuticals runs two plants in the Tivim Industrial Estate at Karaswada: one for tablets, capsules, oral liquids and sterile eye preparations, and the other for creams and ointments. Wallace Pharmaceuticals, in business since the 1960s, has its head office in Panaji.
Several multinational companies also make medicines in the state. Procter & Gamble Health, set up in 1967 as an Indian subsidiary of Merck, runs a composite plant at Usgao in Ponda taluka that began as a small vitamin E unit. Sanofi India's Goa site can make up to 5 billion tablets and capsules a year. Encube Ethicals' first plant, on about 79,000 square metres, makes topical products, and Glenmark has run a plant in Goa since 2004.
