Pharma Companies in Gujarat: an overview
Several of India's largest drug makers are run from Ahmedabad. Zydus Lifesciences traces its origins to 1952, when Ramanbhai Patel founded the business, and makes formulations at Moraiya and biologics at the Zydus Biotech Park in Changodar. Torrent Pharmaceuticals has its head office on the Thaltej Shilaj Road and a plant at Indrad that covers about 2.69 lakh square metres. Intas runs an SEZ plant near Ahmedabad that supplies only regulated markets such as the US and Europe, and is adding a second phase called Pharmez 2. Cadila Pharmaceuticals, also founded in 1952, manufactures at Dholka.
The chemical estates of south Gujarat hold many API and formulation plants. Lupin makes intermediates and APIs at the GIDC estate in Ankleshwar, and Alivus Life Sciences runs API plants at Ankleshwar and Dahej. JB Pharma has three manufacturing campuses at Panoli and a fourth at Ankleshwar, while Wockhardt and Bharat Biotech both list Ankleshwar among their manufacturing sites. Torrent also has a plant at Dahej. Amneal says its India operations employ more than 5,500 people across Ahmedabad, Dahej, Visakhapatnam and Hyderabad.
Outside these two clusters, Vadodara is the oldest centre. Alembic began making tinctures there in 1907 and now runs five formulation plants and three API plants in Gujarat, and Sun Pharma's registered office sits at its Tandalja research centre in the city. North and central Gujarat have smaller specialists: Hester Biosciences makes poultry and animal vaccines at Kadi in Mehsana district, Concord Biotech makes APIs at Dholka and Limbasi, and Lincoln Pharmaceuticals has made formulations at Khatraj since 1979.
