Pharma Companies in Karnataka: an overview
Bengaluru holds most of Karnataka's drug industry. Biocon, started in 1978, is based in Electronic City, and Syngene, its research and manufacturing services company incorporated in 1993, runs labs in the city. Strides has two plants in Anekal taluk, at KRS Gardens and Chandapura, and its head office on Bannerghatta Road. The Bommasandra and Jigani industrial areas on the city's southern edge hold plants of Micro Labs, Bal Pharma, Anthem Biosciences and Hikal, and Micro Labs describes its Bommasandra API plant as one of the largest of its kind in India.
Several plants sit well outside the capital. Syngene's commercial API plant is at Mangaluru; it finished construction in 2020 and was expanded in 2021. Shilpa Medicare began making APIs at Raichur in 1987, still runs two units there, and holds a UK MHRA certificate for Unit VI at Dabaspet. Arya Vaidya Sala of Kottakkal makes Ayurvedic medicines at Nanjangud near Mysuru, and HLL Lifecare's Kanagala plant near Belagavi, opened in 1985, makes contraceptives and pharmaceutical products.
Herbal medicine and research services form two more groups. Himalaya Wellness is based at Makali, Sami-Sabinsa in the Peenya Industrial Area and Natural Remedies at Veerasandra near Electronic City. Jubilant Biosys works from Yeshwantpur and Eurofins Advinus from Peenya. Karnataka Antibiotics & Pharmaceuticals, also in Peenya, is a joint sector company in which the Government of India holds 59.17% and the Government of Karnataka 40.83%. AstraZeneca Pharma India has its head office in Manyata Embassy Business Park.
