Pharma Companies in Maharashtra: an overview
Most of the large drug makers headquartered in Mumbai produce their medicines in other districts of the state. Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, formerly Aurangabad, has the biggest cluster on this list. Lupin's flagship tablet and capsule plant is in the Chikalthana MIDC area, Wockhardt runs a site in the Shendra SEZ, Glenmark makes inhalers and nasal sprays there, and Ajanta Pharma has plants at Paithan, Chitegaon, Chikalthana and Waluj. Indoco and FDC also operate at Waluj, where FDC opened a formulation plant in 1987, and Viatris has a site in the city.
API production sits mostly in the chemical belts near the coast. Unichem began building its first API plant at Roha in Raigad district in 1976, and FDC's API plant at Roha received its first US FDA approval in 1985. Hikal runs plants at the Taloja and Mahad MIDC areas, also in Raigad. In Palghar district, Ipca makes APIs at MIDC Tarapur, and Aarti Drugs has its main address and R&D in the same estate. Further south, Supriya Lifescience runs an API plant at MIDC Lote in Ratnagiri district and a second facility at Ambernath.
Pune district has a separate cluster. Serum Institute of India is based at Hadapsar, Emcure Pharmaceuticals at Hinjawadi and Enzene at Chakan, while Cipla and Alivus Life Sciences both have plants at Kurkumbh; Alivus also makes APIs at Mohol. In Vidarbha, Lupin's plant in the MIHAN SEZ at Nagpur makes oral solids and injectables. GSK's antibiotic plant at Nashik was certified against the BSI AMR standard in 2025, Viatris has a second site in Nashik, and FDC runs an oral rehydration salts plant at Sinnar that opened in 1998.
