Pharma Companies in Vadodara: an overview
Alembic is Vadodara's oldest drug company. It started making tinctures and alcohol in the city in 1907, began producing cough syrups and vitamins in 1940, and still has its corporate and registered office on Alembic Road. In Vadodara district it runs an injectables, ophthalmic and dermatology site at Karkhadi in Padra taluka, which also holds an API plant, and an oral solids plant at Jarod in Vaghodiya taluka. Its other Gujarat plants are at Panelav in neighbouring Panchmahal.
The city is also a research base. Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, run from Mumbai, has its registered office at the Sun Pharma Advanced Research Centre in Tandalja, and its Vadodara R&D centre is GLP-certified. SPARC, the research company demerged from Sun in 2007, says its Vadodara facility has 42 laboratories and more than 200 scientists. Zydus Lifesciences does API research at Dabhasa, and BDR Pharmaceuticals runs its research centre in Gotri.
Padra taluka, west of the city, is the main manufacturing area. Lupin's Dabhasa plant makes potent and oral contraceptive APIs as well as tablets, ophthalmic, dermatology and inhalation products. BDR Lifesciences makes APIs in Luna village, and Senores Pharmaceuticals' subsidiary Apnar Pharma operates at Gavasad. To the east, Bharat Parenterals, incorporated in 1992, makes formulations at Jarod. Vasu Healthcare, which has made herbal medicines since 1980, keeps its head office and research centre in the Makarpura GIDC estate.
