Manufacturing Companies in Coimbatore: an overview
Coimbatore's engineering base grew out of textiles. LMW, formerly Lakshmi Machine Works, was founded in 1962 to give Indian mills modern spinning technology, and it says it is one of three companies in the world that make the full range of spinning machinery. The city still has large textile manufacturers: KPR Mill, set up in Coimbatore in 1984, runs a vertically integrated apparel business, and Precot supplies yarn and hygiene products from its Udaiyampalayam base.
Pumps and motors are the city's other best-known product. Texmo Industries has sold Taro pumps since 1956 from its Mettupalayam Road site. C.R.I. Pumps, based at Saravanampatti, makes pumps, wires and cables, and solar pumping systems, and it has won the EEPC engineering-export award 20 times. Aqua Group at Thudiyalur, Suguna Pumps & Motors on Avinashi Road and Deccan Pumps at Ganapathy are also based in the district.
Engineering and auto-component firms complete the cluster. ELGI Equipments runs its corporate office and a compressor manufacturing centre on Trichy Road, Singanallur. Pricol, headquartered in Coimbatore, began operations in 1975 and has a plant at Perianaickenpalayam. L.G. Balakrishnan & Bros started as a transport operator in 1937 and says it was the first Indian company to supply timing chains to car makers. Craftsman Automation began operations in Coimbatore in 1986, and the Roots Group started out making automotive horns.
