Biotech Companies in Pune: an overview
Pune's biotech industry is anchored by vaccines. Serum Institute of India was founded in the city in 1966 by Cyrus Poonawalla to make immuno-biologicals that the country was then importing at high prices. It now describes itself as the world's largest vaccine maker by number of doses produced and sold, at more than 1.5 billion, and its address is at Hadapsar, off Soli Poonawalla Road. Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech also lists Pune among its four vaccine manufacturing locations, alongside Hyderabad, Ankleshwar and Mallur.
Biologics and biosimilars form a second group. Gennova Biopharmaceuticals, incorporated in 2001, is headquartered in Pune and has both its registered office and its manufacturing unit at the IT-BT Park in MIDC Phase II, Hinjawadi. Enzene was set up in 2015 in a 25,000 sq ft facility in Pune and now runs a 75,000 sq ft R&D site in Phase 2 of the Chakan industrial area, with a second site in New Jersey. Praj Industries, incorporated in 1985 and listed on NSE and BSE, supplies bioenergy plants, process equipment and wastewater treatment from its headquarters at Praj Tower in Hinjewadi.
Smaller firms cover diagnostics, agriculture and drug discovery. Mylab Discovery Solutions, which says it was the first Indian maker to get ICMR and CDSCO approval for a COVID-19 test, runs its Global Innovation Center on Baner Road. GenePath Dx has run a clinical genomics lab in Pune since 2008. Indus Biotech, active since 1995, makes health ingredients from food-chain raw materials at a plant near Pirangut in Mulshi taluka. Bioprime Agrisolutions and Kan Biosys, both at Dhayari off Sinhagad Road, make biological inputs for farming. NovaLead Pharma, in Baner, looks for new uses for generic drugs.
