Companies Headquartered in Atlanta: an overview
The Metro Atlanta Chamber counts 29 Fortune 500 and Fortune 1000 headquarters in the region, along with more than 1,200 regional and global headquarters and over 200 Inc. 5000 companies. In a 2023 article on Assurant's move, the chamber noted that Georgia had 19 companies on that year's Fortune 500 and that all but two were based in metro Atlanta. Several of the largest sit outside the city limits, in Cobb County and Sandy Springs, even though their SEC filings give an Atlanta mailing address.
Inside the city, Southern Company and Georgia-Pacific are downtown, at 30 Ivan Allen Jr. Blvd. and 133 Peachtree St. Midtown holds Equifax at 1550 Peachtree St., Invesco at 1331 Spring St. and Norfolk Southern at 650 W. Peachtree St., and NCR Voyix lists 864 Spring St. Buckhead has Global Payments on Lenox Road and PulteGroup on Peachtree Road. Delta Air Lines gives Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport as its headquarters address, and Chick-fil-A's support center is on Buffington Road.
Some of these companies have long local roots. Equifax dates from 1899, Georgia-Pacific from 1927, when it started in Augusta, and Genuine Parts from 1928. Others arrived more recently: Assurant moved its headquarters from New York to Cobb County at the end of 2022. The Home Depot, founded in 1978, runs its head office on Paces Ferry Road in Vinings, and UPS, founded in 1907, is on Glenlake Parkway. Cox Enterprises, privately held, traces its start to James Cox's purchase of the Dayton Evening News in 1898.
