List of Companies in Mumbai: an overview
South Mumbai still holds the registered offices of many of India's oldest and largest companies. Tata Steel, incorporated in 1907, is registered at Bombay House on Homi Mody Street in Fort, and Larsen & Toubro's registered and head office is L&T House at Ballard Estate. A short distance away at Nariman Point are Reliance Industries at Maker Chambers IV, Tata Consultancy Services at Nirmal Building, the Life Insurance Corporation's central office 'Yogakshema' on Jeevan Bima Marg, and the State Bank of India's corporate centre at State Bank Bhavan on Madame Cama Road.
Banking and finance have also spread north to Lower Parel and the Bandra Kurla Complex. HDFC Bank was incorporated in August 1994 and began operating as a scheduled commercial bank in January 1995; its registered office is HDFC Bank House on Senapati Bapat Marg in Lower Parel. Kotak Mahindra started in 1985 as a bill-discounting finance company and converted into a bank in 2003. ICICI Bank is registered in Vadodara but runs its business from Mumbai, and the National Stock Exchange, which brought screen-based trading to India in 1994, is based at Exchange Plaza in the Bandra Kurla Complex.
Consumer and pharmaceutical companies are spread across the suburbs.
